Traffic Enforcement
TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT INFORMATION:
The safety of our citizens is the number one reason for traffic enforcement in the City of Harrisburg! Running through stop signs, ignoring posted speed limits, and not stopping for people in crosswalks, are all issues that have been recently reported to the city as happening frequently in our neighborhoods. Even more disturbing, is that some of the more blatant traffic transgressions are occurring in and near our schools on a regular basis.
Because of this, the City Council has asked our law enforcement partners to increase the number of hours that are spent in the City on traffic enforcement. In addition to our main law enforcement partners, the Linn County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), the City has recently reached out to our neighbors, to pool our resources with another municipality.
The City of Coburg Police Department will now be working in the City of Harrisburg on a limited basis, in addition to LCSO deputies. This is a continued pilot program between the two cities. The Coburg police department will be providing traffic enforcement services for up to 30 hours a month. In addition to traffic enforcement, they will be monitoring which areas in town are the worst in terms of traffic safety, and will be putting together a traffic study, in order to better enable the City Council to know where changes can be made to better protect our citizens, when it comes to traffic safety. They are also assisting the City in terms of Code Enforcement; citizens will seem them on occasion as they are responding to complaint calls that the City of Harrisburg has received.
The Coburg Police Department is still governed by the City of Coburg. The police will be wearing the Coburg uniform, and will be driving their same black and white patrol vehicles. When in Harrisburg, they will have a magnetic decal on the patrol cars, that will state both the City of Coburg, and the City of Harrisburg. Only the City Administrator or her designee will be directing the Coburg Police as to which areas of town are needing additional traffic enforcement.
If you are stopped by the Coburg police, and have committed a traffic safety violation, you will still be cited into the Harrisburg Municipal Court, which is held here in the City of Harrisburg. In addition, the Linn County Sheriff's Office will still be providing us with traffic enforcement services.
If you are involved in, or are witnessing a crime, or would like to report traffic violations in your neighborhood, then please be sure to ONLY contact the Linn County Deputies. 911 is used for all emergencies. To contact dispatch for non-emergency situations, please call 1-800-884-3911.
You are also welcome to contact the city to let us know your concerns about speeds on your local streets, or to report on areas where drivers are frequently ignoring traffic safety signs.
